iTunes May Take 25% of Music Market by 2012
Sometimes, the headlines say exactly what they need to say. According to this story out of Wired, Apple’s iTunes store may possibly capture 1/4 of the music market worldwide by 2012. I began my collegiate career in the year 2000, and when I got to school and got my T1 net connection, the discussion in the dorms was mostly over what we were going to do about downloading music now that Napster was being shut down. That was less than a decade ago.
Since then, obviously Apple has taken the market by storm. It would be ridiculous if I could sit here and say that since the year 2000, Apple has been carving out a share of the market. However, the fact remains that the iPod was only becoming viable as I was leaving college, meaning that this entire saga will have played itself out in just about 10 years if these projections remain true. That, my friends, is called turning the existing paradigm on its ear.
Mac can go on and on about their Powerbooks and MacBooks and whatever else. However, anyone who knows business knows that without iTunes and the iPod, it is highly unlikely that they would have taken off the way they have. Apple has revolutionized the music industry. This article is worth a look.
